Tubbenden Primary School

PSHE

Intent

At Tubbenden, we are committed to developing well-rounded, confident learners who leave our school ready for the challenges which follow, not only in secondary school but also later on in life. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities, and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. We teach children to respect others and celebrate their differences, support equity for all, and understand their individual roles in society through the fundamental principles behind being a good citizen. These crucial life skills are taught in a range of ways under the heading PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education).

Implementation

The majority of skills are covered through the teaching of our JIGSAW lessons in PSHE. There are 6 Jigsaw Puzzles (half-termly units) designed so the whole school can study the same learning themes at the same time, each year group at its own level. The Puzzles are sequential and developmental throughout each academic year. Being Me In My World allows children to get to know each other; understand class routines and systems; and develops the key skills of cooperation and teamwork. Celebrating Differences allows the children to explore their own strengths and weaknesses, understanding that what makes us different, makes us special. We also explore bullying and how to tackle it. Dreams and Goals centres around setting targets and working out how to achieve them. Healthy Me teaches children to keep themselves healthy and offers them strategies to deal with issues around self-confidence and saying no to people. The Relationships unit enables children to understand how friendships work and shows them how to deal with conflicts. The safe use of technology will also be taught in this unit. Finally, the Changing Me unit explores how our bodies change as we grow and focusses on the things we are looking forward to in the following year.

SCHOOL VALUES Throughout the year, our PSHE learning refers to the key values of our school, which contribute to our Knighthood system and help our children work towards their future as positive and responsible citizens. To REACH happiness and success at Tubbenden Primary School we are:

Respectful

Excellent

Adventurous

Curious

Honest

Impact

We believe our PSHE curriculum will support children in becoming confident, tolerant and self-aware adults. By the time they leave Tubbenden Primary School, we hope that all children have the willingness and abilities to try new things, push themselves and persevere. They will have a good understanding of how to stay safe, stay healthy and develop positive relationships. We encourage them to be respectful of others, and to appreciate what it means to be a positive member of a diverse and multicultural society.

RSE

Intent

Relationships, Sex and Health Education is important for our pupils and our school because it enables pupils to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships. From September 2020, Relationships, Sex and Health Education is compulsory in all primary schools in England. For primary aged children this includes curriculum content under two headings (DfE 2019):

Relationships Education

  • Families and people who care for me
  • Caring Friendships
  • Respectful Relationships
  • Online Relationships
  • Being safe

Health Education

  • Mental wellbeing
  • Internet safety and harms
  • Physical health and fitness
  • Healthy Eating
  • Drugs, alcohol and tobacco
  • Health and prevention Basic first aid
  • Changing adolescent body

We want children to be safe, healthy and happy and we believe this is an important part of safeguarding children, as knowledge empowers them, helping them to stay safe and cope with puberty understanding why their bodies will change.

RHSE A guide for parents and carers

Implementation

Our RSHE programme is an integral part of our whole school PSHE education provision and will include relationships, health and sex education. We have developed the curriculum in consultation with parents, pupils and staff, taking into account the age, needs and feelings of pupils. If pupils ask questions outside the scope of this policy, teachers will respond in an appropriate manner so they are fully informed and do not seek answers online. To ensure progression and a spiral curriculum, the RSHE learning is covered by our Jigsaw PSHE Programme, which includes lessons on ALL aspects of compulsory Relationships and Health Education, designed in a sensitive, spiral, age-appropriate curriculum. It also has a few lessons on human reproduction in Key Stage 2 to ensure children know the accurate facts concerning this before going to secondary school, and to ensure children understand why the body changes in adolescence. Jigsaw believes that this work is vital to support children’s development and to underpin their learning capacity, and that it is most effective when parents and carers work in partnership with the school. Our school will be respectful of the faith, beliefs and contexts of children’s families, engaging with parents and carers. Children’s safety and wellbeing is paramount and schools must fulfil their statutory duties.

Impact

Through our RSHE curriculum at Tubbenden Primary School, we believe we can enhance the children’s education and help them become confident individuals who have in-depth knowledge of how to keep themselves safe and healthy. We encourage the children to have a body positive awareness and will look after themselves physically, emotionally and mentally. Through respect, tolerance and understanding, they will create and maintain positive relationships with a diverse range of family and friendship groups

Mental Health & Wellbeing

At Tubbenden Primary School, we value the emotional health and wellbeing of our pupils and believe that positive mental health is vital towards each child's education and future.  We support and encourage our children to understand their emotions, communicate how they feel and build resilience.  These skills will help them face challenges in life and are important to their development in order to achieve happiness and success.
